Fashion Photography-Podcast

Fashion photography requires a fusion of being a strong portrait photographer and the ability to create images for the advertising market. You must be up to date on the latest design and fashion trends and be able to sell your images to the fashion editor. Fashion photography is advertising and selling high end clothes.

The fashion photography industry is a competitive one. You must have a strong portfolio – both physical and online. A portfolio speaks louder than education or experience. People want to see what you’ve done and see your point of view as a photographer. A strong portfolio is the only way to get past the front door.

If your portfolio isn’t up to snuff, then you need to start shooting. I suggest you post an advert at the local university and in Craigslist stating that you are looking for models that look like such and such. You can also advertise trade work to aspiring models who need more looks for their portfolios. It’s a win-win situation for both of you. Both parties are getting experience and pieces for their portfolios.

Working with models can be a great experience or a horrible one. Some models are a dream to work with, others are not. But, you must always act professional and be as pleasant as possible. It is very important that you network and make friends with the models, stylist, hair and make up artists, and the assistants. Not only will your photo shoots go better, but you never know who these folks know and if you will work with them in the future. Plus, it’s always best to make your shoots enjoyable for everyone. No one gets ahead in this industry by being a bitch. Word spreads just as fast or faster about the crabby photographers as it does about the good ones.

Like any industry, you’ve got to be current with what’s happening. Read as much as you can about the fashion industry. Who are the hottest designers? What are this year’s colors? Knowledge of the industry increases your probability of being successful.
